the problem is only when the car has to climb and hill, the car slows down so bad because it doesn't shift down unless i tramp on the gas.... if any thing its an annoyance, there must be an adjustment im just not sure where it might be. thanks for any ideas

apparently manual shifting, and the 1-d-1 shifting is what kills the aod band the most. avoid doing this and it should last. (mine has 185,000 miles on it and works fine... a slow shift into od is the only thing) The AOD doesnt seem to be as bad as everyone says, at least if you dont beat on it, which is how every auto trans can be destroyed.

If I manually shift into 2nd, it will shift immediately and firmly into 2nd, then I can shift manually into 3rd and it goes in firmly.

The two most likely possibilities are an overdrive band problem, or a stuck 3-4 shift valve. If the overdrive band is worn, when the transmission shifts into overdrive it will neutral out and start to rev freely, but not accelerate the vehicle. If the servo that applies the band is stuck or has badly damaged seals the symptoms will be the same.

The problem is you cannot adjust the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts individually. Raising one will raise both. You can get a Lentech valve body which will change the shift pattern from 1 - 2/3 - 4 to 1 - 2 - 3/4. They have an electric overdrive lockout you operate with a switch. There's a bit of a debate about doing the 1-D-1 shuffle on an AOD.
